A Devastating Transformation a Single Year Has Brought in the United States
One year ago, the landscape was entirely different. Before the American presidential vote, thoughtful residents could recognize America's serious imperfections – its injustices and imbalance – yet they still could perceive it as the United States. A democratic nation. A land where constitutional order meant something. A nation headed by a dignified and upright leader, even with his advanced age and increasing frailty.
Nowadays, as October 2025 ends, numerous citizens hardly identify the country we reside in. Individuals believed to be unauthorized foreigners are collected and pushed into transport, occasionally refused legal rights. The eastern section of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque event space. The leader is persecuting his opponents or perceived antagonists and demanding legal authorities surrender an enormous amount of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are deployed across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, renamed the Department of War, has effectively rid itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny during its expenditure of what could amount to nearly $1tn in public funds. Institutions, legal practices, news companies are buckling from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are handled as members of the royal family.
“The US, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the brink into authoritarianism and fascism,” a noted author, stated recently. “Finally, swifter than I believed likely, it transpired in this country.”
Every morning starts amid recent atrocities. And it is challenging to understand – and painful to realize – how deeply lost we have become, and the rapid pace with which it has happened.
Yet, we know that Trump was legitimately chosen. Despite his highly troubling first term and despite the cautions associated with the awareness of the conservative plan – despite the leader directly declared plainly he intended to act as an autocrat only on the first day – a majority of citizens elected him rather than the other candidate.
While alarming as today's circumstances are, it's more daunting to realize that we are just nine months into this administration. What will another 36 months of this deterioration position us? And if that period becomes something even longer, since there is no one to restrain this leader from determining that another term is necessary, possibly for security concerns?
Certainly, not everything is hopeless. We will have legislative votes next year that could establish an alternate governmental control, if Democrats recapture the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist public servants who are attempting to impose a degree of oversight, like representatives currently launching an investigation into the attempted money grab by federal prosecutors.
And a presidential election three years from now could begin us down the road toward restoration precisely as the prior selection set us on this regrettable path.
We see millions of Americans protesting in the streets across municipalities, as they did last weekend during anti-authority protests.
Robert Reich, stated lately that “the slumbering force of the US is awakening”, similar to past after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or throughout the sixties activism or throughout the Nixon controversy.
During those times, the unstable nation ultimately corrected itself.
He claims he recognizes the signals of that resurgence and observes it occurring currently. As support, he points to the recent massive protests, the widespread, bipartisan pushback regarding a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal refusal by journalists to accept government requirements they only publish approved content.
“The slumbering entity always remains inactive till some venality becomes so noxious, an specific act so offensive toward public welfare, certain violence so noisy, that it has no choice except to rise.”
It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will prove to be right.
Meanwhile, the major inquiries remain: can America return to normalcy? Is it possible to restore its position globally and its commitment to legal principles?
Or should we recognize that the historical project worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?
My cynical mind suggests that the final scenario is accurate; that all may indeed be lost. My positive feelings, however, convinces me that we have to attempt, by any means possible.
For me, as an observer of the press, that involves urging journalists to commit, more fully, to their mission of overseeing leadership. For others, it may be engaging with election efforts, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to protect voting rights.
Under twelve months back, we were in a separate situation. A year from now? Or after another term? The truth is, we are uncertain. All we can do is try to not give up.
