The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club became as messy in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback
A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster without replacements.
He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Discovering His True Position
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
