Courageous Rail Employee Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries Amid Multiple Stabbing Attack on High-Speed Train
A brave train staff member who intervened to protect passengers during a mass knife attack on a high-speed train has suffered critical wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
CCTV video reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to halt the assailant as the train traveled between a city and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders described a frightening 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers running through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for interrogation. Authorities announced a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Emergency Reaction and Consequences
The incident on the weekend resulted in 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have now been released from hospital.
A bystander filmed the individual waving a large knife and being shot with a Taser as he confronted police on the platform. He was reportedly heard yelling, "End my life, end my life."
“This terrible incident has affected many people. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the brave member of rail staff whose relatives are being supported by trained officers,” stated a senior law enforcement official.
Union Response and Calls for Measures
Train unions were swift to commend employees and demand increased measures. One labor official stated he would be “requesting immediate discussions with authorities, rail employers and police to ensure that we have the strongest possible assistance, resources and effective procedures in operation”.
Another union leader urged the rail company and authorities “to move quickly to review security, to help the impacted workers, and to ensure that no incident like this occurs again”.
Driver Praised for Quick Thinking
The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been commended by union officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He did not stop the service in the middle of two stations where it’s obviously challenging for the first responders to reach, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much waiting,” explained a union official.
Additional Details
Police stated they received the first emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One observer described at first wondering if the event was a Halloween joke, but soon realized from individuals' faces that it was real.
Authorities have stated there is nothing to indicate the event was a terrorist incident and have asked the community to provide with any additional information.
Train operations on the affected route are anticipated to experience disruption until Monday, with passengers advised to postpone their travel where possible.
