End of Gaza Conflict Provides Tangible Respite, Yet the US President's Assurance of a Age of Plenty Rings Hollow

T respite following the ceasefire in Gaza is substantial. In Israel, the liberation of captives held alive has resulted in broad celebration. In Gaza and the West Bank, festivities are taking place as as many as 2,000 Palestinian inmates are being freed – though distress persists due to ambiguity about the identities of those released and where they will be sent. Throughout Gaza's northern regions, civilians can now go back to dig through rubble for the bodies of an approximated 10,000 unaccounted-for individuals.

Ceasefire Emergence Despite Earlier Odds

Only three weeks ago, the probability of a ceasefire looked improbable. However it has taken effect, and on Monday Donald Trump journeyed from Jerusalem, where he was cheered in the Knesset, to Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. There, he participated in a prestigious peace summit of over 20 world leaders, among them Sir Keir Starmer. The diplomatic roadmap initiated there is due to be continued at a meeting in the UK. The US president, working alongside international partners, successfully brokered this deal happen – regardless of, not due to, Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Dreams of Independence Qualified by Past Precedents

Expectations that the deal signifies the initial move toward Palestinian statehood are comprehensible – but, in light of historical precedent, slightly idealistic. It provides no definite route to sovereignty for Palestinians and threatens dividing, for the foreseeable future, Gaza from the West Bank. Furthermore the complete destruction this war has produced. The lack of any timeline for Palestinian self-governance in Mr Trump’s plan gives the lie to vainglorious references, in his Knesset speech, to the “epochal beginning” of a “era of prosperity”.

Donald Trump could not help himself dividing and making personal the deal in his speech.

In a period of ease – with the liberation of detainees, halt in fighting and resumption of aid – he chose to recast it as a morality play in which he solely reinstated Israel’s honor after supposed treachery by past US commanders-in-chief Obama and Biden. Notwithstanding the Biden administration a year ago having attempted a comparable agreement: a cessation of hostilities tied to relief entry and ultimate negotiations.

Substantive Control Vital for Legitimate Peace

A plan that refuses one side meaningful agency cannot yield sustainable agreement. The halt in hostilities and relief shipments are to be welcomed. But this is not currently diplomatic advancement. Without mechanisms guaranteeing Palestinian participation and control over their own establishments, any deal risks freezing domination under the discourse of peace.

Relief Imperatives and Reconstruction Challenges

Gaza’s people urgently require emergency support – and sustenance and pharmaceuticals must be the primary focus. But reconstruction must not be delayed. Within 60 million tonnes of debris, Palestinians need assistance restoring residences, schools, hospitals, mosques and other institutions devastated by Israel’s incursion. For Gaza’s interim government to prosper, financial support must be disbursed rapidly and security gaps be filled.

Similar to much of Donald Trump's resolution initiative, allusions to an multinational security contingent and a proposed “board of peace” are worryingly ambiguous.

Worldwide Endorsement and Prospective Outcomes

Robust global backing for the Palestinian Authority, enabling it to replace Hamas, is likely the most hopeful prospect. The immense hardship of the past two years means the moral case for a resolution to the conflict is possibly more urgent than ever. But although the truce, the return of the captives and pledge by Hamas to “disarm” Gaza should be recognized as favorable developments, Mr Trump’s record offers minimal cause to trust he will accomplish – or consider himself obligated to try. Temporary ease does not mean that the possibility of a Palestinian state has been moved nearer.
