Cameron Norrie earned the biggest victory of his professional journey by rallying from a lost first set to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this triumph marks Norrie's first ever success over a current world No 1.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who joins as the latest British man in history to beat a global number one. "Returning from health issues last year, I lost in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to appreciate my game in the latter part of the year. To secure a triumph like this, it's the biggest victory of my professional life, my maiden triumph over the top player and probably the strongest athlete in the tennis scene right now."

The British player, positioned 31st globally, also ended Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive Masters 1000 wins, which was the best series of outcomes in the young champion's developing career.

The top seed appeared to be progressing easily to a win early on as he eased in the first set. Yet, the British contender gradually worked himself back into the game by serving with greater precision and engaging the Spaniard into lengthy, grueling rallies. His unceasing consistency and reliability slowly left its mark.

During large parts of the match, the world number one performed well on serve but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old appeared particularly uneasy hitting his forehand, which has been the best shot in the game for most of this season, committing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 errors. Across the net, Norrie presented his opponent minimal unforced errors, keeping up his consistency, athleticism and power the entire contest while serving efficiently and picking his spots to advance forward and strike effectively.

Following struggling for months due to a major physical setback and struggles with his performance, Norrie fell as far down as 91st globally this season. Alcaraz, despite his remarkable accomplishments, is has not yet figure out how to deliver his best tennis in indoor conditions.
