A senior Russian army officer has been killed following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The event occurred on Monday morning when an explosive device placed beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Authorities indicated that one theory under investigation points to the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Location of the Blast

Officials have been sent to the site, which is reportedly in a southern district of the capital.

Media coverage state the explosion occurred in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.

Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military officials have been attacked within Moscow.
