The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?

For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned in a realm of memories forged from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's youth—a moment that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.

Editor's Note: This discussion details significant events for the concluding episodes.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.

Like many elements this season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident originates in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. That traitor in the tunnel is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is understood of his research, the case most likely held some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, causing the awakening of his powers—powers he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will Byers was possessed by the entity in season 2.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
