The East African nation Receives Cultural Treasures Following a Century Residence in German Hands

Ethiopian Items — This Collection Comprises Crowns, Protective Gear and Paintings All Viewed as Historically Important

A total of Twelve ancient objects have been officially given back to the Ethiopian nation after remaining by a family in Germany for over a century.

These items, originally collected in the 1920's by the German representative to Ethiopia Franz Weiss and his wife his partner, were transferred on this past Wednesday to the research center at the university in Addis Ababa.

The assortment featured crowns, armor and canvases, each considered as culturally significant in the country.

"These treasures still serve as a emblem of the lasting and amicable relationship between Germany and the Ethiopian people," remarked Germany's envoy, the envoy to Ethiopia.

Professor Ramon Wyss, whose parent was born during the household's diplomatic posting in Ethiopia, delivered the items at a gathering attended by the Minister of Tourism Selamawit Kassa.

He explained that the family's aim to return the artefacts was to "share their beauty with the public and preserve the heritage and past connected to my father's birth."

The items were either considered donations or buys, as stated by the household.

"We want to express gratitude to Professor Weiss's household for actively demonstrating their profound appreciation for Ethiopia by meticulously safeguarding these treasures and vitally securing their homecoming to their proper nation," commented the tourism minister.

She noted that the pieces would soon be made accessible to the people for study and educational purposes, describing the move a landmark in safeguarding the nation's historical legacy.

"Initiatives will continue to bring back ancient items that are found in the possession of collectors and entities around the planet," she said.

In the era of colonialism in Africa, many of historical artefacts were plundered.

The demand by the continent's states for the return of taken items has been met with certain progress in recent years - even if some items are only on loan.

In 2022, the German government was the first nation to repatriate a selection of the renowned historical items to Nigeria as part of an effort to confront its "dark past."
