The royal figure surrenders his designation as the Duke.
Prince Andrew is surrendering his honors, including the York's Duke, he has announced in a own words.
He has been under increasing scrutiny over his connections with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with calls for the Palace to take measures against him.
That now appears to have resulted in the prince deciding to willingly give up his honors and to relinquish membership of the Garter Order.
In his announcement he said he continued to "vigorously deny the allegations against me".
"In consultation with the monarch, and my close and broader family, we have agreed the continued allegations about me divert from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family," said a announcement from him.
"I have decided, as I always have, to put my responsibility to my family and country first.
"I stand by my choice five years ago to stand back from official duties.
"With the King's agreement, we think I must now go a further step. I will therefore no longer use my designation or the awards which have been granted to me. As I have said before, I strongly deny the accusations against me."
Prince Andrew has encountered a range of issues, among them a legal case he settled with the plaintiff, questions about his economic affairs and his connection with an accused foreign agent.
He will remain a member of royalty - but will stop to be the Duke of York, a honor bestowed from his parent, the late Queen Elizabeth.
He had already stopped to be a "participating figure" and had given up the use of his royal style and no longer participated at state occasions. His status now will be even more lessened.
His previous partner will be known as Sarah and no longer the Duchess, but their children will continue to have the title of royal princess.
Prince Andrew has faced intense attention over his links with disgraced financier the financier, more lately featuring doubts about when he had truly ended ties.
In his media discussion, Prince Andrew had said that he had ended all links with the financier after they had been photographed together in the city in late 2010.
But messages sent in February 2011 later emerged suggesting that he had privately stayed in touch with him, for example exchanging a communication: "Keep in close touch and we'll have further interactions soon!"
There had been increasing annoyance in the monarchy at the issues that remained to plague the prince.
Next week a late publication by Giuffre will be issued which is likely to draw more scrutiny on his involvement with Virginia Giuffre and the financier.
