Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
