What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
At least 16 lives perished and over 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
